Poulnabrone Dolmen
Standing proud in the vast landscape of the Burren, the iconic megalithic tomb at Poulnabrone is one of Ireland’s most photographed archaeological sites and is the second-most visited location in the Burren, after the Cliffs of Moher. Dating from the Neolithic period, this distinctive monument has revealed a wealth of information about the lives and burial customs of Ireland’s very first farming communities. It is the oldest dated megalithic monument in Ireland and represents one of the very few Irish portal tombs that have been archaeologically investigated. Poulnabrone Dolmen is a short trek off the road that runs between Ballyvaughan and Kilnaboy, making it an excellent stop off if you’re planning to travel to either town. Entrance to the site is free and comes with informational boards that border the tomb indicating the history of the magnificent structure.
